Important Facts About The American Black Bear

The American black bear is smaller than the grizzly bear and more commonly occurring in North America, with territory spanning from the northern regions of Canada all the way to Mexico. The American black bear is extremely versatile and can adapt to a variety of climates and eco systems. Black bears typically weigh between 200 and 300 pounds with males tending to be about a third heavier than females. The American black bear is an omnivore and can adapt to a diet of fish, carrion, fruits, vegetables, nuts, as well as fresh meat from hunting if the need arises. Unfortunately more and more black bears are mingling with humans due to deforestation, and are beginning to pose a threat to both rural and urban communities across North America. If you see a black bear in an inhabited community, do not approach it. Call your local animal control officer immediately.
