The way that the metal is manufactured makes it lightweight and able to bend. First used by the United States Army back in World War Two, Quonset huts were prized not only for the movability and light weight, but also for their easier construction. The versatile Quonset huts provided for housing while also providing shelter and space for medical facilities, mechanical workshops, libraries and post offices. After the war Quonset huts were viewed as a piece of architectural inspiration in Art and Architecture magazine and their influences can still be seen in the architecture of today that prizes open space. The versatility of the Quonset huts has allowed them to be used by the army and by any civilian that needs a roof for a wide range of purposes.
